The Difference Between a Facial and a HydraFacial

Customers in our Montreal salon ask for HydraFacials almost as frequently as they ask for traditional facials. (Yes, they’re that popular.) But what exactly is the difference between a HydraFacial and a traditional facial? And which facial is right for you?

The Difference Between a Traditional Facial and HydraFacial

It gets a little complicated because there are a lot of different types of facials but one key difference:

Most traditional facials include some form of manual extraction whereas HydraFacials don’t (meaning if you have sensitive skin, hydrafacials may be a better choice for you since extractions can often aggravate skin).

What are the similarities between HydraFacials and traditional facials?

Both HydraFacials and traditional facials may include cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration (of course) and antioxidant protection.
Both HydraFacials and traditional facials cleanse pores, hydrate skin, exfoliate dead skin and provide some cosmetic relief from fine lines and dark spots (like age spots).
HydraFacials employ a three-step process during facial treatment. These steps include: cleansing, exfoliating and infusing your skin with a serum selected for your skin type.
From Owner Claudia Iacono’s previous article on this topic:
A HydraFacial is a patented skin treatment available in medical spas and dermatology offices. It’s also sometimes called “hydradermabrasion” because it involves microdermabrasion-like exfoliation paired with hydrating serums.
Both facial types provide relaxation, which is key in this frantic world.
Facial muscles are often tense and frequently overlooked when getting a massage. Facials include manual touching which encourages full relaxation of the face, including around the jaw area (notoriously tight for many of us).
Facials have scientific evidence backing their abilities to alleviate anxiety and promote well-being.
It was concluded that the facial massage might refresh the subjects by reducing their psychological distress and activating the sympathetic nervous system.
