Since we’re stuck at home, many of us have taken on some major spring cleaning projects. It feels good, to clear our space of unneeded “stuff” and start anew, even during these complicated times.
But what about our skin? Doesn’t it deserve a spring cleaning too? Pores are a reservoir of dead skin cells, bacteria and dirt. As time goes by, our pores become increasingly clogged, which leads to dull and dirty skin.
How to Spring Clean your Skin
Clean your skin frequently…but don’t overclean. Most of us think we clean our skin well but we often do it quickly and not so effectively. It is recommended that our skin needs cleaning TWO TIMES daily. Use the exact amount suggested on your cleanser (products are most efficient when used at just the right amount). Use your fingertips and not wash cloths which can become bacteria-laden. A sign you’ve cleaned too much? That “squeaky clean” sensation we used to think was a good thing.
Steam your pores gently. Steam breaks up the debris that can collect in pores. This makes it easier to clear away bacteria and skin cells. Steaming also helps us sweat, which promotes circulation–also key to healthy skin.
Be aware: those with skin conditions such as rosacea or eczema should refrain from steaming.
Exfoliate two times a week with gentle exfoliant. Most of us have read of the dangers of harsh exfoliants like apricot kernels. But now, the skincare market is full of products that exfoliate gently like jojoba beads, oatmeal and pumice crystals. Exfoliating ensures the removal of dead skin cells and encourages healthier skin production.
Vary your moisturizer. We can all get hooked on one moisturizer. But varying moisturizers ensures new nutrients enter your skin. And don’t forget to consider the season. A heavier moisturizer might be better suited for colder Montreal months, for example. Just make sure the ingredients are words you can actually pronounce!
