It’s not every day that one haircare company gets it all right: combining the best and safest ingredients with the high-tier styling ability of a salon product. Pureology nails it with shampoos, conditioners and other haircare products that are still a favorite since 2001.

The story behind Pureology

Pureology first released its haircare products in 2001. L’Oreal purchased the company in 2007, seeing the very real and growing need of many women and men. Our collective voices said something like this:

“I want a salon-level shampoo and conditioner that makes my hair look great and uses good eco-friendly ingredients…and no sulfate!”

Sulfate-free shampoos ~ what it means

Let’s remember: sulfate-free wasn’t always a “thing.” Most of us hadn’t heard of the term before Pureology hit the market. But we could see the end results of sulfate-heavy shampoo: dried hair that appeared lifeless and felt crisp.

To add insult to injury: most shampoo bottles advocated the same (untrue) message: wash your hair daily and twice! Rinse and repeat, remember? Can you imagine the hair damage that was done?

What are sulfates exactly ~

Sulfates are in your house right now, no doubt. It belongs to a class of cleansers name anionic surfactants (a powerful cleanser basically). So they are often in a host of household cleaners, like floor cleaners or countertop sprays…even many kinds of toothpaste contain sulfates (which can damage gums and cause sensitivity (which they conveniently have another toothpaste to treat).

Pureology ~ a long history of sulfate-free haircare

Today’s haircare has to be more than sulfate-free. The average consumer is far more informed. They want natural ingredients that actually nourish the hair. They want a clean scent that doesn’t smell like a cheap perfume. They even want to believe in the company. They want to know where their hard-earned money is going and whether the company is worthy of their business.

According to one article:

Purelogy is now trying to implement authentic, empowering and inclusive standards that all brands are trying to adopt. Pureology’s relaunch includes, in part, cleaner formulations, new packaging, a new tagline and a new approach to Instagram.
