About Old Montreal
Old Montreal’s historic core stretches along the St. Lawrence River, bounded by McGill Street to the west and Berri Street to the east. The district showcases magnificent examples of French colonial, British colonial, and Victorian architecture, with many buildings dating to the 1600s and 1700s still serving active roles in the city’s cultural and commercial life.
Key landmarks include the stunning Notre-Dame Basilica with its soaring Gothic Revival architecture, the historic Bonsecours Market, Montreal’s elegant City Hall, the atmospheric Place Jacques-Cartier with its flower vendors and street performers, and the Château Ramezay museum showcasing 300 years of Quebec history.
The Old Port (Vieux-Port) waterfront area has been transformed into a spectacular linear park with cycling paths, outdoor activities, seasonal festivals, and the iconic Grande Roue de Montréal observation wheel. The Tourisme Montréal website provides comprehensive visitor information for planning your historic district exploration.
