Mount Royal Park | Montreal’s Central Urban Park Near Salon Deauville
Mount Royal Park (Parc du Mont-Royal) is Montreal’s crown jewel and one of Canada’s most celebrated urban parks, rising majestically above the city center | just 15 minutes east of Salon Deauville, Montreal’s premier hair salon and spa.
Inaugurated in 1876, this 200-hectare park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same landscape architect who created New York’s Central Park. Despite Olmsted initially warning Montreal Park Commissioners that the steep terrain would make park construction “very unlikely,” his vision transformed the mountain into an urban oasis that has captivated Montrealers and visitors for nearly 150 years.
About Mount Royal Park
The park sits atop Montreal’s namesake mountain, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the St. Lawrence River, and the South Shore. The iconic Mount Royal Cross, first placed at the Colline de la Croix summit in 1643 by Montreal’s founder Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve, illuminates the mountain every night and serves as a beacon visible throughout the city.
Mount Royal Park is famous for its diverse ecosystems, featuring over 600 plant species and numerous bird varieties. The park includes several notable features: Lac aux Castors (Beaver Lake) with seasonal activities, the Mount Royal Chalet with spectacular city views, the beautiful Smith House visitor center, and extensive network of hiking and cross-country skiing trails.
The Ville de Montréal manages the park in partnership with Les Amis de la montagne, who offer equipment rentals, guided tours, and seasonal activities including the famous Tuques Bleues winter celebration.
