The Modern Mullet

« Back to Glossary Index

Mullets get a bad rap, tied and tethered to the ’80s, acid-washed jeans and, well…bad taste. But the mullet has come a long way. Let’s welcome in a newer, more modern version of this classically maligned haircut.

The mullet has several alternative “pet” names such as the Kentucky Waterfall, the Camaro Crash Helmet,  the Camaro Cut, the Missouri Compromise, the Ape Drape, the Canadian Passport.

What exactly is a mullet haircut?

Most simply put, a mullet is a hairstyle where the hair is cut shorter at the front and sides but is longer at the back.

As you see from that definition, the mullet covers a LOT of ground. This means many cuts are mullets without being called a mullet (since many cuts are shorter at the front and longer at the back, right?).

The resurgence of the mullet haircut for men post-pandemic and TikTok

The mullet served a practical purpose when it comes to at-home haircuts during the lockdown: it’s a pretty easy haircut to maintain since a large portion (the back) of the hair is just left to grow. On TikTok alone, there are tens of thousands of videos of Millenials sporting newer, modernized versions of the mullet haircut, adapting it in ways that go far beyond the 80’s.

There is also something nostalgic about the mullet haircut. People reflect and remember that time during the 80’s. During the pandemic, many longed for simpler times. Like fashion, haircuts can bring us back in a comforting, fun way.
